The engineering challenge behind Stockport’s £20M bridge replacement

A major transport junction in Stockport has reopened following the replacement of the Greek Street rail overbridge, a project valued at approximately £20 million, according to Network Rail and industry reports. The structure carries a busy roundabout over the West Coast Main Line, one of the UK’s most important rail corridors. The previous bridge, which had been in service for several decades, was replaced to improve long-term reliability and safety.

The reconstruction involved a full railway closure of around three weeks, during which the existing bridge was removed and a new structure installed using large crawler cranes. Hundreds of engineers and workers were involved in continuous operations to complete the dismantling and installation within the limited possession window, as reported by project stakeholders.

Delivering the bridge replacement above a major operational railway required careful planning and coordination. The works had to account for the presence of overhead line equipment and maintain strict safety and clearance requirements throughout construction.

The constrained urban setting limited available working space, requiring coordinated delivery of materials and precise sequencing of lifting operations. Large structural components were transported under controlled conditions, while crane operations and foundation works were carried out in close proximity to existing infrastructure.

The use of pre-assembled elements and planned installation sequences enabled the project team to complete the bridge replacement within the allocated railway closure period. In addition, underground utilities, including drainage and service lines, were reinstated as part of the reconstruction works.

The completed bridge restores a key transport link between Stockport and Edgeley and supports both road and rail connectivity in the area. The project forms part of ongoing efforts to upgrade infrastructure along the West Coast Main Line.

The scheme highlights the importance of construction staging and logistical coordination when delivering infrastructure projects in constrained urban environments.
