Road closures near Kirk Hill bridge have now been lifted as Network Rail’s reconstruction project moves closer to completion. The removal of traffic restrictions marks a major milestone for a scheme designed to improve rail clearance, maintenance access and long-term route resilience on the Midland Main Line.
The bridge reconstruction was originally planned as part of the Midland Main Line electrification programme. Although electrification was later paused, the Department for Transport approved the project to continue because of the wider operational benefits it brings to the railway.
The upgraded bridge will provide additional clearance for larger gauge freight trains, allowing more goods to move by rail rather than road. It will also provide enough space beneath the structure for electric or bi-mode trains if electrification is restarted in the future. This makes the bridge a future-ready asset rather than a short-term replacement.

A key challenge was delivering the works while keeping disruption as low as possible. The old bridge was demolished during Christmas 2025, when no passenger services were running in the area on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Other critical works were carried out overnight and at weekends, allowing the railway to remain open for much of the programme.
The road closures around Kirk Hill were also carefully planned. Because diversion routes had to use the same type of road as the road being closed, several nearby roads were restricted to prevent them from becoming unsafe shortcuts. This created inconvenience for residents and businesses, but it allowed the reconstruction works to proceed safely.
The project included the installation of a temporary utility bridge to keep gas, electricity, water and broadband services operational during construction. This is often one of the most complex parts of bridge replacement works, as buried and attached services must be protected, diverted or temporarily supported without interrupting local supply.
The reconstruction has also included new bridge components, new parapet walls using around 14,000 bricks, high-strength concrete, installation of utility services into the new bridge deck, and highway and drainage works. These elements are not only about replacing the old structure. They improve safety, durability and railway access.
Better maintenance access is expected to support progress toward removing a long-standing speed restriction, which would improve reliability on the route. This shows how a single bridge upgrade can contribute to wider railway performance.
Remaining works include demobilising the compound and reinstating the site before planned completion in September. With the bulk of reconstruction now complete, Kirk Hill bridge demonstrates how targeted railway structures can be upgraded to support freight capacity, future electrification and more reliable operations.
