The giant factory that is manufactured by Tesla in the Nevada desert is very important since it will be the place where batteries will be produced for hundreds of thousands of affordable electric cars.
These batteries will be 30% cheaper than others which means that the total cost of electric cars of Tesla will be lower. Besides, the battery is 25% -50% of the cost of an electric vehicle.
The technological advantages of the new Tesla batteries comprise the use of a synthetic silicon-graphene with six times more storage capacity than the conventional batteries which are currently used.
The Gigafactory will be one of the biggest buildings in the world. Its position depends on the eventual extension of the original plan and when it will be fully operational it will be able to produce more batteries compared with the global production of batteries in 2013.
Its ceiling is designed so as the entire surface to be covered by solar panels.
Solar panels will be installed, also, on the slopes that surround the unit.
Solar panels will reduce greenhouse emissions.
The engineers who design the innovative factory were forced to use existing technology solutions in a different direction and scale.
For example, a heat pump is proved to be more efficient than steam generators that use gas.
Why then the factories do not use the technology of efficient heat pumps and prefer gas? The answer is that there is probably gas network that crosses industrial parks and people do not look for alternatives.
Sometimes, the ambitious (and restrictive) targets for a net zero carbon footprint and net zero energy foster creative thinking and innovation.
