Fatal Walkway Collapse at Naples Housing Complex
A devastating incident unfolded at the Le Vele di Scampia housing complex on the outskirts of Naples, where a third-floor walkway at Vela Celeste partially collapsed, leading to the tragic deaths of two people and injuring 13 others, including seven children. The collapse, which occurred late Monday night, July 22nd sent shockwaves through the community, as the dilapidated estate was already earmarked for demolition as part of a broader urban redevelopment project. The victims, Roberto Abbruzzo, 29, and Margherita della Ragione, 35, were among the 800 residents awaiting rehousing under the ReStart Scampia initiative.
Ongoing Challenges in Scampia
The Le Vele di Scampia estate, notorious for its association with crime and poverty, gained infamy as the setting for the hit TV series "Gomorrah." Built in the 1960s and 70s, the estate's "sail-shaped" buildings have long been symbols of urban decay. Despite the ongoing demolition efforts that began in 2020, Vela Celeste remained the most populous block, highlighting the complex challenges of urban regeneration in such areas. The collapse has intensified scrutiny of the conditions in Scampia and raised urgent questions about the safety of remaining residents in similar structures.

A Renewed Commitment to Redevelopment
In the wake of the tragedy, Naples' mayor, Gaetano Manfredi, expressed deep sorrow and affirmed the city's commitment to the ReStart Scampia project. Safety checks are being completed, and social services are providing support to displaced residents. The Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, also offered condolences to the victims' families. This incident underscores the critical need for continued investment in urban regeneration to prevent such tragedies and improve living conditions in neglected areas like Scampia. The €18 million redevelopment project aims to transform the area and remove the stigma associated with its troubled past.
