The company claims that the plant, which will be installed near Zurich, Switzerland, will be able to capture about 900 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year.

This amount of carbon dioxide will be sold to a nearby greenhouse that will be able to increase lettuce production by 20%.

The unit will cost three or four million euros and will serve as a pilot project of implementing this technology on a commercial scale.

The technology is based on an innovative filter that chemically binds CO2 to its surface. The capture carbon is released as gaseous carbon dioxide of high purity by heating the filter to 100 degrees Celsius, and this process allows the filter to be used several times.

In the short-term, the company plans to supply CO2 to drinks companies.

An ultimate ambition of Climeworks is this technology to be used as a store of renewable energy in the form of a climate-neutral synthetic fuel that will be produced from atmospheric carbon dioxide, water and clean electricity from renewable sources.
