A limited-edition shoe that aims to help raise awareness for the preservation of our seas
On June 8, in honor of World Oceans Day, Adidas unveiled a pair of training shoes which are made almost entirely out of plastic found in the oceans. It was created as a collaboration between the sports brand and Parley, a conservation group whose mission is to raise awareness about ocean waste and recycling. The green wave pattern across its upper part is made of recycled gill net, which was dredged from the sea and recycled into the fibre. The rest of the upper is formed using plastic waste collected around the Maldives, where the government is collaborating with Parley to clean the seas around the island. The sole is the only non-recycled part.
The company presented the prototype during an event at the United Nations headquarters in New York in July, 2015. One year after, a limited-edition of 50 pairs is launched through an online competition on Instagram which will last until the 31st of July.
