Europe’s highest cable car, Matterhorn Glacier Ride II, is now connecting the Swiss Matterhorn Glacier Paradise mountain station and the Italian Testa Grigia at 3,883 and 3,480 meter altitudes respectively.
Matterhorn Glacier Ride II was inaugurated on July 1st and is part of the CHF 140 million Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, which also consists of the Matterhorn Glacier Ride I that opened in 2018.
The Glacier Ride II has a journey time of 4 minutes and can carry up to 1,300 passengers per hour.
Franz Julen, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Zermatt Bergbahnen stated that the idea of this cable connection was first conceived over 80 years ago, in 1939. He also said that Zermatt Bergbahnen will further invest about CHF 200 million in the project over the next ten years.
Finally, the new station’s façade also houses a photovoltaic facility, capable of producing 16,875 kwh per year.
