Video footage has emerged, showing the moment that part of a building in Miami collapsed onto the sidewalk during demolition, in the afternoon of Saturday, September 23.
Furthermore, the site where the accident took place is located at 700 Brickell Avenue in Miami’s financial center, Brickell, and demolition work was carried out to make way for the construction of the One Brickell Centre, a new 80-story skyscraper.
Luckily, nobody was hurt by the falling debris, but as can be seen in the video, a large part of the structure that collapsed onto the street narrowly missed passing traffic.
The City of Miami issued a statement saying that the Building Department was aware of the incident and Building Inspectors were deployed on the site, which was tapped off, and all demolition activities had been halted.
Moreover, a meeting was held on Monday between Miami City officials, the property owner, the contractor, the project engineer, and the Florida Department of Transportation. It was decided for limited access to be allowed on site in order for the repair of scaffolding protection and the evaluation of the remaining structure to be carried out.
After these works are completed, the Florida Department of Transportation and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (FDOT) will once again open Brickell Avenue, except the south sidewalk, while the contractor will need to provide a detailed report about the causes of the accident, as well as the recommendation of new safety measures.
Any future work on the site will be allowed to resume after the contractor’s report has been evaluated and approved by the Building Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
