It was announced on Monday, November 20, that New York’s first offshore wind turbine had been successfully installed at the South Fork Wind Farm.
Furthermore, the announcement came from New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, and marked the first of twelve 11 MW turbines being installed at the farm.
As for South Fork, it is New York’s first offshore wind farm, located about 35 miles (56 km) east of Montauk Point and 19 miles (30 km) southeast of Block Island.
South Fork is scheduled to have a 132 MW power capacity and is going to provide the energy needed by roughly 70,000 Long Island homes.
This is the first step towards New York’s goal of developing a total 9 GW offshore wind capacity by 2035.
As for the project’s timeline, first approval came in 2017 by the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Board of Trustees, while actual construction started with the onshore grid in February 2022.
As of June 2023, all the turbine foundations had been installed, while completion of the project is expected in late 2023 to early 2024.
This farm is also the first commercial-scale one to be built in the US.
