The HS2 project has reached another milestone with the completion of Stoneleigh Road Green Bridge, an innovative structure near Kenilworth, Warwickshire. As one of 16 green bridges designed for the high-speed railway, it combines modern engineering with environmental sustainability, providing both a dual-carriageway for vehicles and safe passage for wildlife.
A Sustainable Infrastructure Solution
Construction on the 33-meter-long, 42-meter-wide bridge began in October 2023, involving a team of 50 experts at peak construction. The deck slab, requiring a massive 1,900m³ of concrete, has now been completed, along with 32 parapets, each weighing nine tonnes. These structural elements not only support transport but also create nature corridors, allowing birds, small mammals, and insects to move freely across the railway.

The Next Phase: Road Realignment & Green Corridors
With major construction now complete, the next steps involve realigning Stoneleigh Road to integrate the bridge into the surrounding infrastructure. A new roundabout will also improve access to Stoneleigh Business Park, enhancing local connectivity. Nine-meter-wide vegetation strips will be planted on both sides, reinforcing biodiversity and ecosystem connectivity. The landscaping and realignment are expected to conclude by Autumn 2025, at which point traffic will begin flowing over the bridge.
Blending Engineering with Environmental Responsibility
HS2’s commitment to integrating green infrastructure extends beyond Stoneleigh Road, with over 500 bridges and 50 major viaducts included in the project. As construction progresses, HS2 continues to create jobs, enhance transportation networks, and deliver a railway that harmonizes with the natural landscape.
