On September 15, the town of Stronie Śląskie in Poland was devastated by a dam burst, flooding the area with torrents of muddy water. Triggered by heavy rainfall from Storm Boris, the dam on the Morawka River gave way, sending massive waves surging through the town, engulfing roads and buildings. The catastrophic event marks the worst flooding the region has experienced in over 20 years.
Emergency services swiftly arrived on-site to manage the situation and prevent further damage. The floods affected several regions across Europe, with Poland being particularly hit hard. The government responded by declaring a state of natural disaster, a move confirmed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. This declaration will allow for critical resources and funds to assist in recovery efforts, as well as the possibility of evacuations in severely impacted areas.
The Polish government has allocated one billion zloty from its reserve fund to aid those affected by the flooding. Meanwhile, neighboring Ukraine has offered assistance, showing solidarity in response to this regional crisis.
A Community in Recovery
As residents work to recover from the devastation, the scale of the damage is still being assessed. The floodwaters have caused extensive destruction to infrastructure, homes, and businesses. With emergency measures in place, the focus now turns to rebuilding and ensuring the safety of those impacted.
