British Steel has secured a significant multi-million-pound contract to supply rail for a new high-speed electric railway in Turkey. This substantial agreement involves delivering tens of thousands of tonnes of track for the project that will link Mersin with the cities of Adana, Osmaniye, and Gaziantep in southern Turkey. This initiative aims to establish a lower-emission transport link between Turkey’s second-largest container port and inland cities over 150 miles away, with an anticipated annual reduction in CO2 emissions exceeding 150,000 tonnes.
British Steel President and CEO Xijun Cao expressed immense pride in the contract award, emphasizing the critical role the company will play in enhancing Turkey's transport infrastructure and delivering significant environmental benefits. “We pride ourselves on providing solutions to the challenges our customers face and look forward to supplying this project with the world-leading rail synonymous with the British Steel name,” Cao stated.
A pivotal aspect of this project is the support from UK Export Finance (UKEF), the UK government's export credit agency, which has underwritten €781 million (£680 million) to support the construction of the 286km railway. With financing through UKEF’s Buyer Credit Facility, Rönesans Holding will spearhead the construction of the Mersin-Adana-Gaziantep High-Speed Railway on behalf of the Turkish Ministry of Transport, with British Steel serving as a key supplier.
Erman Ilıcak, President of Rönesans Holding, highlighted the project's environmental and industrial benefits, stating, “By upgrading the existing railway line to a high standard, we will reduce the negative environmental impact while offering a lower-carbon travel alternative and significantly enhancing the region’s industrial connectivity and trade.”
Craig Harvey, British Steel’s Commercial Director – Rail, echoed the enthusiasm for this venture, viewing it as the beginning of a unique partnership between British Steel, UKEF, and international contractors. He emphasized the unmatched supply chain solution offered by combining high-quality rail with world-leading financial support for global markets.
The first shipments of rail, manufactured in Scunthorpe, are scheduled for transport to Turkey in the second quarter of 2024. These rails, classified as 60E1 in grade R260 and each 36 meters in length, will be instrumental in realizing this transformative infrastructure project.
