Tilted Structure in Kolkata, the Inferior Materials and Red Flags on Construction Standards

In a densely populated area of Kolkata, a four-story building in Vidyasagar Colony, Ward 99, Jadavpur, tilted dangerously onto an adjacent structure on January 14, raising safety concerns and prompting swift action by authorities. Visuals show the partially collapsed structure leaning precariously, drawing crowds and intensifying concerns over construction standards in urban environments.

The affected building, constructed in 2010, began tilting three months prior to the incident, forcing residents to evacuate. On January 14, while repair work was underway using advanced technology, the structure tilted further and partially collapsed onto a nearby single-story apartment. Thankfully, no casualties were reported as the building had already been evacuated. However, significant property damage has been recorded.

Officials from the Disaster Management Group (DMG), fire brigade, and police immediately secured the site, planning to dismantle the unstable structure to prevent further accidents. Trinamool Congress MLA Debabrata Majumdar suggested that the incident occurred during repair attempts to lift the building.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that inferior materials were likely used during the building’s construction, leading to its structural failure. Compounding the issue, the structure was built on a filled wetland with highly compressible behavior, compromising its foundation. Former councilor Debasish Mukherjee criticized the construction, highlighting that it violated regulations and posed risks to residents.

Residents shared their distress over the situation, with one noting, "This building has been a constant source of fear. We’ve lived with the threat of collapse for months." Experts are now conducting a thorough investigation to pinpoint the exact causes of the collapse and evaluate the safety of surrounding buildings.

This incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to building codes and ensuring quality materials in construction. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation and associated agencies are expected to take stringent measures to prevent such occurrences, protecting lives and property in rapidly urbanizing areas.
