Rescue and Reflection: Structural Collapse at Kannauj Railway Station

A tragic structural collapse at the under-construction terminal of Kannauj Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh, India, highlighted the critical importance of safety in construction. On January 11, 2025, a portion of the two-story structure, part of an infrastructure upgrade under the Amrit Bharat Yojana, collapsed, leaving 28 workers trapped under the rubble.

The incident occurred during concrete pouring on the structure’s lintel, which caused the shuttering to fail. The collapse was captured on CCTV, showing a beam striking the temporary support structure, triggering the disaster. Emergency teams, including state and national disaster response forces, worked tirelessly through the night to rescue all 28 trapped workers.

While no fatalities were reported, 23 workers sustained injuries, with eight in critical condition. The injured were swiftly transported to hospitals in Lucknow and Kanpur, where they are receiving treatment. Officials cordoned off the site to ensure public safety and launched an immediate investigation to determine the cause of the failure.

A three-member high-level committee has been established to investigate the incident, focusing on construction practices and adherence to safety standards. Preliminary reports indicate that the scaffold supporting the framework failed under pressure. This raises concerns about the quality of materials and the oversight of construction protocols.

In response to the incident, compensations were announced for the injured—₹50,000 for minor injuries and ₹2.5 lakh for serious injuries. The investigation aims to establish accountability and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
