The world’s first 16MW wind turbine has been connected to the Chinese power grid, from the Pingtan offshore wind farm.
The park’s developer had announced, back on June 28, that installation work had finished, and the park was soon expected to be put into operation.
They also described some of the features that the MySE 16-260 had to offer. Furthermore, the turbine’s tower stands 152 meters tall, while the engine room, along with its generator, weigh 349 metric tons. The turbine’s rotor has a 260-meter diameter, while each of the blades weighs an extra 49 tons. Finally, according to the developers, these features give the MySE 16-260 the lightest per megawatt weight title.
As for the park, it is located in the East China Sea, offshore the Fujian province of China. This is a level 7 location with winds exceeding 51 km/h more than 200 days a year.
MySE 16-260 itself is designed to withstand windspeeds of up to 287 km/h, which exceed the harshest conditions ever measured in the Western North Pacific. In addition to this, the turbine has more than 1,000 sensors and can adapt to existing weather conditions in real time.
Finally, a single one of these machines can power up to 36,000 Chinese homes, while it was earlier announced in 2023 that even more powerful 18MW turbines are soon expected to go into production.
