The construction of a colossal 14,500-tonne box structure to carry the HS2 rail line under the A46 Kenilworth Bypass in Warwickshire is reaching its final stages. This groundbreaking project highlights the power of innovative engineering to deliver large-scale infrastructure efficiently while minimizing disruption to road users.
A Smarter Approach to Construction
Instead of building the structure directly beneath the A46, the project team opted for an "offline construction" method. The massive box is being assembled on land adjacent to the bypass, eliminating the need for long-term traffic management that could have disrupted commuters for up to two years.
At the heart of this structure are 120 concrete beams, each ranging from 13 to 24 meters in length, which were carefully placed atop the box over a 14-day period. With the beams in place, the next steps involve completing the deck, installing parapets, and preparing the structure for its final move.
In spring 2025, the completed box will be slid into its final position under the A46 using an advanced jacking mechanism. This innovative system allows the structure to move 64 meters at a controlled speed of 2.5 meters per hour, ensuring precision and safety.

Minimizing Disruption, Maximizing Efficiency
To prepare for the box push, the road will undergo short-term closures in February for essential upgrades, including drainage work, barrier installation, and adjustments to the central reservation. These measures aim to ensure minimal impact on road users while maintaining safety during the complex operation.
