It is the first time this off-the-grid street lighting technology will be applied, combining kinetic and solar energy!
These innovative solar-kinetic street lights will be installed in Boulder Plaza, Las Vegas, after the city's collaboration with the NYC-based start-up EnGoPLANET. The partnership was announced by EnGoPLANET in March 02, 2016.The street lamps are equipped with highly efficient solar cells, and can collect additional energy from kinetic energy tiles. When someone steps over a tile, the energy produced (up to 7W per step) is stored in a battery. This way, a 25 to 75W LED lamp is powered, along with the extra features (smart sensors, USB ports and wireless charging pads).
‘Currently, there are over 300 million street lights in the world, releasing more than 100 million tons of CO2 per year. Our generation has the moral responsibility to transform our energy system. EnGoPLANET’s Street Light will revolutionise the way we illuminate streets. It will reduce CO2 emissions, lower maintenance bills and, with many new features, it will make cities smarter’, says Petar Mirovic, CEO of EnGoPLANET. ‘If you look at traditional street light poles, you will see that they are useless. They simply hold the lighting. With our solution, we’ve changed that by incorporating useful features into the pole and transforming it into a free service spot where people can rest, charge their portable devices, or connect to WiFi’, he adds.
