A Greek start-up uses dead seagrass leaves as its primary raw material
A Greek start-up company wanted to create useful products that would also have a positive environmental impact and eventually even replace their plastic counterparts that now dominate the market. And so they did, by inventing and patenting PHEE-board, a flat panel made from the leaves of seagrass Posidonia Oceanica and biological resins, which serves as the base for the various items they design. Actually, PHEE has become the first company worldwide to fully utilize dead seagrass as a primary raw material. Setting the bar even higher, they now aim to further expand the commercial use of products made of seagrass, by stimulating awareness regarding the collection and commercial use of this raw material and by promoting environmental and social responsibility throughout their value chain
The patented PHEE-board
The vascular sea plant Posidonia Oceanica (whose dead leaves are used for the production of the PHEE-board) is, according to scientists, one of the oldest living organisms on Earth. The people at PHEE noticed that every year, large quantities of dead leaves are washed up in abundance on the Mediterranean shores and are disposed as waste, so they wanted to find a way to upcycle them. After 3 years of R&D, they managed to create the PHEE-board, a highly aesthetic cellulose-based material that can be used to develop high added-value products. The PHEE-board is sustainable and fire resistant, and can find appealing applications in various industries, such as furniture and interior decoration.
The products
They have launched smartphone cases (prices start from 19.90 €), i-pad cases (at 35€), the world’s first Real seagrass handcrafted beach-racket (in limited quantities) and square boxes in different sizes for multiple purposes.
