Europe advances decarbonisation with electrified cement and hydrogen terminal projects

Europe is intensifying efforts to decarbonise heavy industry through large-scale engineering solutions targeting both cement production and energy systems. With the European Union aiming for climate neutrality by 2050, more than 120 projects are currently under development, focusing on reducing emissions in some of the most carbon-intensive sectors.

A key area of innovation is the development of a fully electrified cement production process. This approach replaces traditional fossil fuel-based clinker production with electrified calcination using high-temperature plasma systems. Electrified sintering is also being explored, offering additional potential for emissions reduction. Given that cement production accounts for approximately 8% of global carbon emissions, this transition could substantially lower the environmental impact of construction materials.

At the same time, new infrastructure is being planned to support low-carbon energy systems. A major terminal concept in the Netherlands aims to import liquid hydrogen while exporting captured carbon dioxide. The system is designed to recover and reuse cold energy from hydrogen processing to liquefy CO₂, improving overall efficiency. The initial phase is expected to handle substantial volumes of both hydrogen and carbon dioxide annually, with further expansion planned.

These developments reflect the increasing integration of energy and industrial systems to reduce emissions. Their long-term success will depend on regulatory alignment, economic feasibility, and the ability to scale these technologies across multiple sectors.
