Over a century after the iconic Pamban Bridge first connected Rameswaram to mainland India, a bold new chapter has begun. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 6, 2025, the New Pamban Bridge stands as India’s first vertical-lift sea bridge — a marvel of modern engineering that blends function, durability, and symbolism across the Palk Strait.

Spanning 2.07 kilometers, the bridge not only replaces a historic structure but redefines it. Featuring a 72.5-meter navigational span that can lift 17 meters vertically, it ensures seamless maritime navigation while accommodating heavier rail traffic and faster trains.
