Kalavasos Bridge Repairs: Addressing Outdated Structures and Highway Disruptions

The Kalavasos Bridge on the Nicosia-Limassol highway has been at the center of attention recently, causing significant disruptions for thousands of drivers. Constructed in the 1980s following American standards, the bridge has now been deemed outdated and in need of substantial upgrades to comply with modern European and seismic safety regulations. The restoration project began in October 2024 and has been divided into two phases, addressing the southern and northern bridges separately. Despite an initial plan for 10 months, efficiency measures reduced the timeline to six months, although a 31-day concrete sector strike caused slight delays. The first phase, covering the southern bridge, is now set for completion by the end of January 2025, with the northern bridge upgrades slated to conclude in late May 2025.

The Kalavasos Bridge restoration involves cutting-edge technologies and techniques aimed at ensuring structural integrity and extending its lifespan. Key interventions include reinforced concrete jacketing, waterproofing, bridge bearing enhancements, and the installation of advanced drainage systems. Safety features, such as modern expansion joints and reinforced parapets, are also being incorporated to meet current standards.

The project, budgeted at €5.5 million, is a crucial part of the broader modernization of the Nicosia-Limassol highway. The Public Works Department has implemented strict penalties for delays, encouraging timely completion without compromising safety or quality.
